Living Room Mood Board & Favorite Online Decor Finds

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

With our new house's foundation laid and the roof trusses sitting on the lot as we speak, we're inching closer to our move-in date hopefully this coming August. I've been prepping for when it all comes together this summer, editing our current decor and adding a few new colorful additions. Want to see what's on deck so far?

Scroll down for all the details and hints on where to find bargain living decor that looks like a million bucks! Included are links for ALL the items shown in the mood board below that are still currently available for purchase, if anything catches your eye.

Speaking of bargains, I particularly like pairing affordable rugs with good quality throw pillows. Most times, if the rug is well made, it doesn't have to be expensive. On the other hand, while I absolutely have some (shockingly) cheap pillow covers as well, I also have a few "splurge" covers that add a chic touch and elevate the overall look.

First, let me share one of the best deals on Amazon right now, in my opinion. I have this set of two velvet pillow covers in teal and plan to order more colors for the new house, probably in navy and coral. Bear in mind these are covers only, so you can simply use them with whatever throw pillows you already have on hand, presto!

One of my all-time favorite Amazon finds: 2 velvet pillow covers for $19 (as of today.)

Curated Nomad pillow; see Overstock link below.

Pictured above is a slightly higher-end find. I just love this pillow cover! I keep trying it in every room and it looks great everywhere. Living room, owner's suite, guest room... yep, it still looks great everywhere. Again, this is just the cover, so you'll need a 14x20 inch pillow insert.

Margaret Navy & Pink Hand Embroidered pillow cover; see Overstock link below.

The ivory pillow cover shown above is a nice mid-range find and I have to say, this looks even better in person. It has beautiful hand embroidery! This is not your average printed pattern, it's a lovely textured fabric with gorgeous stitch work.

Black and white rug by Artistic Weavers; see Amazon link below.

This is the rug currently in our living room; I also have a smaller one on the kitchen. As you can imagine, having a toddler living her best life playing and snacking in our living room, I was worried about having a rug with so much light-colored area. However, despite many (and I do mean MANY) spills including strawberries she recently ground into the rug along with banana yogurt, so far everything has scrubbed out really well. That is, everything except for one small mysterious orange stain... good thing I'm planning on layering another rug on top in the new house anyway!

Multiple sizes and colors available.

Safavieh Handmade Natural Fiber Jute Rug in navy; see Amazon link below.

I love a natural fiber rug! Plus, this one is handmade. This is the rug I'm planning to layer over the black and white one mentioned above. The fringe brings a little extra fun to the party. Dirty hippie approved! (And that's referring to myself, of course. :) As an FYI, the reviews on Amazon aren't great but the same rug has overall positive reviews on Overstock. Hmmn... worst case if it doesn't work out, both websites have great return policies. I've never had an issue returning via either site, so I'm willing to give the rug a try! I hope it works out.

I'm planning to layer this blue fringed jute rug over the larger black & white rug.

Silver Orchid coffee table in chrome; see Overstock link below.

I have mixed feelings about sharing this one. When I bought our coffee table less 2 and a half years ago, I paid about $200. Now it's at least twice that at $400 from Overstock and $554 from Walmart. This has been a great coffee table for sure, but would I be a harsher critic if I paid more? I'm not sure. We do like it and it's held up well with our toddler. We also have the matching end tables, though as you can imagine, the prices have risen significantly since buying those, as well.

If the new pricing strikes you as a little steep, check out this similar-looking option from Amazon. At that price and with free Prime delivery and returns, it kind of feels like one can't go wrong trying this affordable option. If you do, let me know what you think!

Great reviews and free returns; it seems worth a try!

A design book that also happens to look great on your coffee table! See Amazon link below.

Finally, here is one of my favorite inspirational design books slash attractive coffee table books. Of course, I love black and white, so this particular book cover is just my style. However, it's more than a pretty cover. Erin seamlessly weaves personal stories and professional design advice together in an easy reading format. Bonus, it's gone down in price since I bought it - yay for you!

A coffee table book that's actually worth reading!

Wrapping up the items shown in my mood board, note that a few items are no longer available from their original brands, but you may be able to find second-hand versions.

  • The black and white striped throw blanket was originally from Ikea but is no longer available. In fact, recently I had to search all of E-Bay and Poshmark to replace mine after years of use. I hope Ikea brings that one back some day.

  • The decorative balls that I carefully chose from Amazon are now showing "currently unavailable." They were in my "saved for later" cart when I made the mood board. However, no doubt there are plenty of decorative balls to go around. Hint: Hobby Lobby is a great spot for the finishing touches like this.

Now offering convenient & affordable virtual services!

As a reminder, I'm now offering VIRTUAL interior design services including creating custom mood boards to inspire your space & personal e-shopping lists when you're ready to update your look:

And that's the plan so far for the living room! I guess you can tell we're pretty excited to move into the new place. Frankly, the rental is getting a bit crowded ever since Black Friday and Cyber Monday's amazing deals stuffed the place with a huge lighting fixture box and an oversized art canvas for 70% off. And that's not even mentioning Christmas... The planned playroom is looking more alluring by the day. Now I know why people have those!

Granted, in keeping with the philosophy I preach to others, if we were staying in this house, we'd have to cut down. But since we're planning a move to a larger place, the accumulation temporarily continues. I may be planning a little early, but what can I say, I like to give things time to go on sale! :)

Meanwhile, here's wishing a wonderful last month of winter to you all as March is just around the corner and with it comes... drumroll... Spring Cleaning! Make sure to SUBSCRIBE to this blog so you don't miss my All-Natural Cleaning Handbook COMING SOON!

With Love,

Molly
