July/August 2022: Drywall and an "Alarming Update"... That Maybe Isn't So Bad?

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

This is the first time I've combined two months in one blog post. I usually send a little pictorial update every single month, but in July there just wasn't much happening, especially not that would show in photos. Inspections aren't very photogenic. :)

Thankfully, August saw lots of progress! Granted we are not moved in yet as we had hoped, but there are lots of positive things to share, despite what I now refer to as "the alarming update".

We're getting there!

At one time, we were told the house would be done April-June 2022. Then many months later, we were told construction had slated our home for completion August 15. We hadn't been given any more updates on move-in dates since being told this. So, you can imagine our surprise when on August 1st at our pre-drywall walk-though, our construction manager told us that they were "nearly to the halfway mark."

Hmmn.

Umm...

WHAT?!?!?

Now, the question is, halfway since what starting point? We assume that he isn't counting from when we signed our contract back in early June 2021; that would mean there are another 14 months to go. There is no way this house takes 28 months to build, lol. Perhaps he meant halfway since he was brought onto the project and work on the land began, which was in January; that would mean there are 8 more months to go. But that seems like overkill, too... I have never heard of a house (not a typical home, anyway) that takes 8 months beyond drywall to complete.

So what did he mean by that? When will we move in? He couldn't say for sure. Maybe by the New Year... maybe by Christmas... At the earliest, it sounds like MAYBE by Thanksgiving. So, that's our new prayer, that's we can be "Home for the Holidays"!

The cutest greeter in the world!

As I told anyone I talked to afterward, at that moment you could have knocked us over with a feather! Yes, we were pretty shocked, but I can only believe it's not quite as bad as all that!

After all, since August 1 and the "alarming update" as I call it, a lot has happened! This makes me think perhaps the construction manager is counting "halfway" differently somehow.

At any rate, here are some photos of all the progress!

Hello, drywall!

We had our pre-drywall walkthrough (which is when the alarming update occurred), and then later that week, drywall was complete! The photo above shows the front door open with a view of the dining room on the left.

The breakfast nook.

Drywall makes a huge difference visually. Now we can't see through the walls! It's so much easier to get a sense for the space in each room. Also, we can't walk through the walls anymore... good thing I took those cheesy pics back when I did!

The walk-in shower.

Above is a photo of the walk-in shower in the primary bathroom. There is meant to be a stand-alone tub in front of the wall. The wall will be painted black and I have a large, colorful canvas art piece to hang there. I'm also planning a chandelier above the tub, though we haven't purchased that yet.

The plumbing is actually incorrect; you can see it comes out of the floor but the faucet we chose is a wall-mount. We pointed that out and we were told it can most likely be made workable, however. Whew!

Exterior stucco is complete!

Stucco makes such a huge difference; the house no longer looks like a construction project but more nearly like a completed home. It will be painted white soon. The outdoor fireplace (above) is actually going to be covered in stone veneer, but it's a good close-up of the stucco work in the meantime.

Not only was stucco completed, but the ground was leveled a bit more including the previously wild driveway entrance. It had washed out to the point where we could barely drive from the road into our own driveway. I don't have a before/after photo of that, but it's much better now. You can see above that the ground in general is leveled.

She loves climbing the stairs to Daddy's office.

We are cautiously optimistic that we will be home for the holidays. I can't wait! In the meantime, school has started; our daughter is in preschool and I am teaching part-time. We are loving our new coworkers and friends. The next thing you know, we'll be inviting them all to our housewarming party! :)

With Love,

Molly
